Ed Anderson is the music teacher for Seminole Springs Elementary and former Middle School Band Director and Steel Band Director for Space Coast Jr/ Sr High in Port St. John, Florida. Mr. Anderson has been active clinician in the field of steel drum education, performance, and pedagogy.
In 2000, Mr. Anderson founded Space Coast Steel, the steel band comprised of students from Space Coast Jr/Sr. High School. In its first year of existence, Space Coast Steel participated in The All-American Music Festival, where the group won the “Most Outstanding Performance” Award. Also, Space Coast Steel has been featured on several occasions as part of Walt Disney World’s Christmas Atmosphere in which the band has performed multiple times in Disney World’s Downtown Marketplace, Old Key West Resort, and the Caribbean Beach Resort.
In 2007, Mr. Anderson added a new dimension to steel drum education by the inclusion of Special Education Students into the steel band. Students with mental disabilities performed alongside the mainstream students in concerts and performances throughout Florida. He chronicled his inclusion program in his article, Hesitations and Realizations: a Journey of Inclusion, published in the Florida Music Director.
2009 saw a change for Ed as he became the Music Specialist for Seminole Springs Elementary School. Here, he founded “Black Bear Steel”, the first elementary steel drum group in Lake County, Florida. Black Bear Steel has consistently earned Superior ratings at the Florida Music Educators’ Association Steel Drum Festival.
Ed has presented clinics at both the Florida Music Educators’ Association Annual State Conference and the Florida Music Educators’ Summer Music Institute. The focus of is clinics have been steel drum pedagogy and performance. Also, his steel bands have presented several concerts at the FMEA Annual Convention. Mr. Anderson currently maintains an active performing schedule, as a freelance Steel Drum Performer He has performed in such venues as Universal Islands of Adventure and Jimmy Buffet’s Margarittaville, Universal Citywalk, the Florida Keys and LasVegas.
