"Calc-You-Later" is a rock-style piece for early steelband. It contains rhythms made up entirely of quarter notes/rests and eighth notes/rests which make this a great piece for very early bands to learn. The standard notation score ensures accuracy and consistency when teaching rhythms and octaves. The non-standard(symbolic) music notation of the individual parts should allow bands who struggle with music reading skills to access this piece very easily without being overwhelmed. This is part of the Flex Series: Flexible Compositions for Flexible Steelband(more info below). With Rehearsal Numbers, Colored Shapes, or song structure terms you have the choice to hold up fingers to call a section, say or hand signal with shapes, call out colors, or call out the song form to organize the structure in real time with your band. This piece is perfect for someone with a steelband full of less experienced readers or someone who is leading a steelband experience for people with limited musical understanding.

A Note from Jordan: "I wrote this piece the night after my first rehearsal with my younger steelband (8-11yrs old). The first rehearsal showed me immediately that almost none of them had any music reading skills and absolutely none of them had any pan experience. I went home and brainstormed:

- I needed to get moving quickly and with rehearsal only 1x per week I knew that rote learning probably wouldn't suit the situation.

- I needed something without the intimidation of standard notation but with some teachable concepts peppered in.

- I needed something rhymically/melodically simple and with limited polyphony.

- I needed something fun and energetic without being difficult.

This piece is the result and it was a hit! The students loved it because they felt some instant success but still had room to grow into the piece as a whole. They are still requesting to play it again!"
