"Walking Down the Avenue" by David Singhaus

List Price: $37.00
Price: $32.00

Difficulty: Easy (great for junior high, high school, and college steel bands)

"Walking Down the Avenue" was written as part of a project I did while I was studying for my Master's degree at George Mason University. Our pan professor, Victor Provost, challenged my classmates and I to write short pieces for beginners and then we would perform them in class. This is the second of two projects done. This is a pedagogical piece used to introduce young students to Calypso music, the indigenous folk music of Trinidad and Tobago. The "Avenue" also refers to a very specific street in Trinidad and Tobago. The street in question is Aripita Ave, which is one of the main streets that the colorful Masquerade Bands parade down on Carnival Tuesday.

A few notes: Though there are no fill measures marked in the Drum Set part, the director could instruct the student where fills can be incorporated into the part once the student becomes more comfortable with the groove. The form of the piece is straight forward, but the director can repeat each section if the time of the piece needs to be extended.

If there are extra performers to play extra percussion parts, here are some recommendations to add to the groove: (For the Cabasa part, hold the instrument in the palm of one hand and twist the instrument with the other in time)

Difficulty: Easy (great for junior high, high school, and college steel bands)

Instrumentation: tenor/double seconds/cello-guitar/bass/drum set/percussion
