The tenors have a simple melody and serve in more of an accompanimental role, which allows the other voices to shine. Letter C is a bass section solo built around an arpeggio. I would recommend starting this section early in the learning process to allow the bass pan players to feel comfortable with movements. The piece ends with a fadeout at the letter E. I recommend keeping students still as the sound fades out to nothing. The drumset player uses a onedrop reggae beat on the ride cymbal during letters B and D. The snowfall inspired me to write a chart where the steel pans sang like a choir. The focus of the smooth legato rolls on the pans recreates the image of snow falling on the ground. I recommend starting to learn letter G first. Each steel pan plays a descending F major scale, starting with the tenors and ending with the bass pans. This same scale can be used in the open solo section in letter D. An accompaniment part was written for double seconds, triple guitars, and basses, but these voices can take a solo as well. The director can choose to keep the pulse steady at 80 bpm or allow the piece to flow in and out of that tempo. The double seconds and triple guitars have a consistent strumming pattern throughout the entire piece. The whole steel band can work on these rhythms together. The drum set uses a standard soca rhythm at Letter B and a reverse soca rhythm at Letter C. There are sixteenth notebased rhythms in the tenor line at Letter C. The pattern is repetitive and can be learned very quickly through rhythm exercises. Letter A and Letter F use the same phrases. I would recommend working on these parts together in rehearsal.
