Sarian Sankoh (b. 1996) is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, educator, and vocalist.  Having graduated from New York University (NYU) in 2018 with a bachelor’s in Music Theory & Composition, Sarian now lives in Brooklyn, New York.  When is comes to her art, Sarian uses musical storytelling as a means to understand and translate her experiences of the world as a black, queer, fat, woman.

Sarian has studied songwriting under Czech pianist, Beata Hlavenková, at NYU Prague and under Grammy and Emmy-nominated composer, David Wolfert.  An avid songwriter, Sarian began performing her own music with a band under the mononym SARIAN.  Since starting the band in 2017, they have played at various New York venues such as Mercury Lounge,  House of Yes, and Pianos.

In 2017 Sarian discovered the joy of playing in a steel band and joined the NYU Steel Ensemble directed by Joshua Quillen of Sō Percussion.  Since then, she has arranged for NYU Steel (Dang! by Mac Miller and Anderson .Paak) and has performed in the 2019 Brooklyn Panorama with Casym Steel Orchestra.  Sarian is excitedly looking forward to joining Skiffle Steel Orchestra for the 2020 Panorama in Trinidad & Tobago this February.

Sarian has also performed in various choral groups including the NYU Madrigals and NYU University Singers.  In 2018, Sarian joined C4: The Choral, Composer/Conductor Collective, a group dedicated to performing challenging choral works written within the last 25 years.  Interested in innovative and unique musical performance, Sarian has been fortunate enough to have performed as a vocalist for numerous premiers such as David Lang’s Mile Long Opera and Massimo Lauricella’s Para além.

Sarian is also passionate about social justice and education as well and devotes much of her time to teaching and learning from others.  She has taught music in a number of summer camps in NYC and worked with VH1 Save the Music Foundation to restore music programs in US public schools.  In addition to that, Sarian has worked at the NYU LGBTQ+ Center educating others on LGBTQ+ issues and providing resources for the members of her community.

Among other things, Sarian also enjoys cooking, reading and drinking tea on rainy days, and spending time with her loved ones.
