This tune starts off with a unique percussion groove we don’t typically hear with steel bands. Similar to a samba, the groove is driven by accented rhythms on the snare drum across a two-measure pattern. The drummer can make subtle variations to this, but the effect should remain the same, especially with the low tom on beat 4. Jouvert is the opening day of Carnival in Trinidad. It begins before dawn with a parade that can last for hours, complete with revelers caked in mud! A road march like this can potentially loop for the entirety of the Jouvert parade. I would suggest taking the DS loop once or twice. The solo is optional and can be played in place of the verse.

Difficulty: Medium (great for high school and college steel bands)

Instrumentation: tenor/double seconds/ostinato/guitar-cello/bass/drum set/engine room (congas/brake drum/shaker/cowbell/etc.)
