A murmuration is when a flock of birds flies together as one unit. This is a beautiful event to witness as each individual bird contributes to the large mass moving in the sky. This piece was inspired by seeing a murmuration on the drive to work one day and reflecting on how something so wonderful can take place in everyday life through coordination and synchronization.

Each player gets a moment to shine and will be challenged throughout the piece. Sticking and vibraphone pedal markings are included as well as a notation key for the drumset part. An optional player 5 (glockenspiel) part is included and would replace player 4's glockenspiel part. This piece is in the key of d minor. Time Signature: Mostly 4/4 but also uses 3/4 and 5/4. Tempo: 128 bpm, 65 bpm, 72 bpm, and 78 bpm. Approximate performance time is 4’ 45”.

Rhythmic Vocabulary: Whole/half/quarter/8th/16th notes and rests, 8th/16th note triplets, syncopated rhythms, and 8th note/16th note combinations.

Difficulty: Medium/Advanced (great for high school and college ensembles)

Instrumentation: player 1: marimba (treble clef) (A3-Bb6)/player 2: marimba (bass clef) (F2-C5)/player 3: vibraphone (F3-D6)/player 4: drumset (kick bass drum, snare drum, high hat, splash cymbal, and crash cymbal)/Optional Player 5: glockenspiel (written A3-F5).
