Samba de Arcata was written in 1993 in Arcata, California for the California State University Summer Arts “Percussion in World Music” program, where Ray Holman was an artist in residence. This arrangement is true to the original recording of this beautiful composition for steelband, which was released by Ray Holman and the Humboldt Calypso Band in 1998. Set in a medium-tempo samba groove, the lyrical melody and driving chorus are offset by a contrasting and tuneful bridge section that ends with a nice call-and-response motive between the upper and the lower steelpans. There is also an open solo section over the chord changes from the verse that is perfect an emerging soloist who wants to develop and refine their improvisational skills.

Difficulty: Medium (great for high school and college steel bands)
