Summer Song was composed in 1987 for the Percussive Arts Society “Panorama USA” and it was performed at the opening ceremony of PASIC 1987 (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) by a massed steelband comprised of over 140 players, featuring Len “Boogsie” Sharpe as the guest steelpan soloist. This piece is full of fire and life. The tuneful and melodic verse section and powerful call-and-response chorus section are followed by a development section that features both upper and lower pan variations that are challenging, but accessible. There is also an open solo section over the chord changes from the verse that provides a great opportunity for a soloist to develop their improvisational skills, and the solo section concludes with a drumset & percussion break that leads the band back into the intro material. This tune has interesting and active parts for all sections of the steelband, and is a favorite of players and audiences alike.
