The Star-Spangled Banner was composed in 1814 by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812 after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor. Its powerful lyrics and memorable melody have made it one of the most enduring symbols of the United States. This steel band arrangement brings the anthem to life with the rich, resonant sound of the steel pan ensemble while maintaining the dignity and respect deserved by this national treasure.

A few notes:

The melody should always be the focal point of the arrangement. Encourage your students to listen across the ensemble and support the melody with balance and control. This piece works well for ceremonial events, concerts, and patriotic celebrations. Take time to shape the phrases and observe the dynamic markings to create a meaningful and expressive performance. A steady tempo and consistent groove will help keep the arrangement unified and dignified

Focus on even roll technique throughout all sustained passages. Rolls should be smooth, controlled, and even, with no gaps or accents between strokes. This is especially important in the introduction, during longer tones, and in all harmonic support parts. Above all, approach this piece with pride, musicality, and respect.
