Waves is a 4+ minute dramatic piece in 5/4 time that is cinematic and progressive. This piece showcases the steelband in a different style and without a drum part or engine room. This piece is based on the 4 types of breaking waves in the ocean: Spilling, Plunging, Surging, and Collapsing.

There are 4 distinct phrases of music to learn in this piece. The 4 sections are attached to the types of breaking waves and a labeled as such in each part. Dynamics are very important to the flow of this piece and to providing the form and flow overall. The rhythms are limited to 8th, quarter, and dotted half notes. Tone production should be round and warm until the f to ff dynamics and then they should become brighter.
